Get to Know: The Chanel 19

Discover today's 'it bag' - the Chanel 19

Making its debut in Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2019 runway collection during Paris Fashion Week, the Chanel 19 was an instantly coveted style that has only grown in popularity and demand since. This 'it bag' style is one of the last creations by the late Karl Lagerfeld, designed in collaboration with Virginie Viard, Chanel’s current creative director. The name “Chanel 19” is based on the year of its conception — 2019 — similar to the Chanel 2.55 Flap Bag, named in honor of Coco Chanel's introduction of the bag in February 1955.

The silhouette is quite unique and noticeably less structured in comparison to Chanel’s other resident flap bags such as the Classic or the Boy. With its more pillowy look and feel, there is an effortless contemporary youthful appearance that still manages to incorporate quintessential Chanel touches, including the CC turn lock clasp and diamond quilting. These classic features; however, are reinvented with stylish twists, such as, but not limited to, the exaggerated, oversized quilting and contrasting mixed gold-tone, silver-tone, and ruthenium hardware finishes.

Originally the style was released in five different sizes, including a waist bag, wallet on chain, medium flap, large flap, and maxi flap, in a remarkably lengthy list of materials, such as goatskin, lambskin, and tweed. The instant success of the Chanel 19 demanded more variants, and the collection continues to grow with each season adding new silhouettes, small leather goods, and fresh materials. Innately versatile in its modern design, there are two ways to carry the bag for ultimate convenience; a longer, polychrome chain & leather strap for shoulder/crossbody wear, or a shorter chain top handle to tote in hand.

Season after season, the Chanel 19 continues to evolve and coordinate alongside Chanel’s thematic collections. As with all other styles in their lineup, the retail price continues to rise, with the medium Chanel 19 flap in goatskin or lambskin jumping dramatically from its original price point of $4600USD, as reported in October 2019, to its current retail price of $5700USD. Undoubtedly, the Chanel 19 has proven to be a solid investment with its limited availability for certain colors and materials in Chanel boutiques directly. This has driven a competitive landscape on the secondary market, often commanding a premium, and a long search for the right one.
